How fast can a hard drive read and write 2,000 Harry Potter volumes?
Michael Johnson, a mechanical research and development engineer at Seagate's Normandale site, demonstrated how fast a computer and hard drive can transmit information by having participants write the first letter of their names using ASCII code, and then comparing it to the number of bits or letters the computer wrote during the same amount of time. The 'bit stopwatch' converted results to the number of Harry Potter books the computer transmitted.
Other projects demonstrated the reading of magnetic fields, creating a magnetic image with an inductive writer, the power of nanotechnology, binary encoding, disk vibration and more.
'We were just bowled over by the team from Seagate,' said David Rhees, executive director of the Bakken Museum in Minneapolis. 'This was, in my recollection, the most extensive and effective effort to do public programming by any corporate partner we've worked with in my entire 23 years here. I saw both parents and small children get really engaged with the displays. But it was the enthusiasm and knowledge of the Seagate team that made it click for our visitors.'
